Discover the African Art of Adire Dress Making When You Travel to Nigeria

Lagos is regarded as the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria. It is known for its hustle and bustle, as well as an intricate blend of cultures - both local and foreign. Many residents in fact refer to it as no man's land because indigenes from all parts of the country (and outside) have made it home.

The result is a breathtaking kaleidoscope of cultures evidenced - in part - by the regular display of different attires by each cultural unit. One of the most prominent cultures in Lagos is the Yoruba tribe. They are able to lay claim to being the sons of the soil in Lagos, but are accommodating to outsiders.

As a key component of South Western Nigeria, Lagos also shares fashion and cultural trends with adjoining regional states. And one of the most distinctive facets of the Yoruba culture is the Adire art form. From the earliest days of the arrival of foreigners in Nigeria, history has shown that one of the greatest attractions tourists and visitors have found in Nigeria, has been the Adire.

Adire is a unique traditional textile made by the Yorubas, using hand knotted cloths that have been dyed in indigo. The art of making this patterned cloth has been passed down across generations, even though at a time, it suffered a decline in popularity amongst practitioners and its patrons.

Efforts by some celebrated practitioners of this elegant age old art form have however helped to launch a recent renaissance in this field. Most prominent amongst those involved in this re-awakening of interest in the Adire, locally and internationally, has been Nike Davies Okundaye, a strong advocate of African Arts, with a mission to export it to the rest of the world.

She has achieved worldwide recognition for her exceptional artistry in making Adire cloths over a three decade period, and up till date. Her website http://www.nikeart.com provides extensive resources that offer insight into her work - including offering links to other websites which reflect the international appeal she enjoys. This exceptional lady was featured on the cover of The African Courier magazine, in its February/March 2010 issue, with six pages dedicated to a review of her work, including excerpts from an exclusive interview she granted.

Today, Nigerian fashion designers in the 21st century also creatively employ the Adire in evolving a unique range of very fashionable and trendy African designs, which are regularly showcased in fashion show catwalks across Africa and even beyond. This is one of the great benefits the Adire affords - it is highly adaptable for use in various forms, for various purposes - decorative or otherwise.

If you are a lover of African art, the Adire dress making process is definitely one to be explored. More importantly, especially if you feel you cannot spare the time to visit a place where these unique creations are made, look out for the many shops where beautiful Adire cloths are put up for sale. Be sure to get informed opinion about how to purchase the types that are durable, and will not fade when washed, at reasonable prices.

It would interest you to know that quite a number of good hotels in Lagos, and other western states often have gift shops with sections dedicated to the sale of artworks - including Adire. Note however that these shops can be a bit pricey, and that you can get much better bargains buying directly from the less pretty stalls of the local people or residents, some of who actually make it themselves. It is well known that the best places to buy well done Adire dresses include Abeokuta in Ogun State, and Osogbo in Osun State - where Nike Davies Okundaye runs one of a number of her galleries in the country.

So, don't forget, when you visit Nigeria, to make out time to explore the world of Adire cloth making, picking up a few souvenirs to take back home with you. If the news we have heard from other visitors to Nigeria is anything to go by, you and those you share your artistic gifts with, will be raving about and showing them off with pride!

Astro Socks

Astro Socks is a wonderful little juvenile action adventure fiction with a little space and astronomy thrown in. The lead character, Chris, is a young boy who wants to find a solution to socks continually falling off his infant sister. Chris shows us some of the creation process, how to take notes, the things to consider when creating a new product and reaching out to others for their expertise.

Author Leigh M. LeCreux shows how being smart and having unique interests is nothing to be ashamed of; it is something to celebrate. The young boy's journey through the invention process was very realistic. I thought the inclusion of frustration and feelings of inadequacy are realistic no matter what age one might be, but that perseverance will always win in the end.

The most appealing aspect about this book is the impressive and inspiring idea that a young person could invent a product that would be taken seriously by the corporate world. That reminds me of a guest on my radio show from the Green2Gold organization - Alan Tratner told me then about a young person who had invented a compostable golf tee that would prevent damage to the golf range and equipment but also would prevent injury and a horrible death for animals who mistake golf tees for food. This invention is now patented and like the main character of Astro Socks, this child will not likely have to worry about the cost of University in the future.

As a writer myself, I am impressed with the way that Leigh LeCreux was able to put so many elements into the book, yet simplifying the storyline enough to keep young readers interested. The 90-page paperback does not state any modern eco-printing or eco-publishing options being employed, however environmentalists may be appeased by the fact that it was printed in the US - reducing fossil fuel expenditure during transport. The illustrations created by numerous youth were very interesting and added an element of real-life to the story.

Rating 4 out of 5 stars.

The Past, Present, and Future of Country Music at the Recent Grammy Awards

If there was one thing the country music artists who performed at the recent Grammy Awards proved through their performances, it is the fact that country music remains as a vital part of the American music industry through all these years. Performers such as Lady Antebellum and The Zac Brown Brand joined onstage by the legendary Leon Russell, as well as country singers Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, and Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles all represented the past, present, and future of country music, showing the world how much it has grown over the years.

First to take the stage was fast-rising band Lady Antebellum, known for their well written country love songs, who earlier won the award for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals, establishing their hold on the group category by wresting the award from fan favorites Brooks & Dunn and Rascal Flatts. Their rendition of their latest single "Need You Now," from their latest album of the same title, wowed the audience because of their great vocal harmonies-one trademark country music is known for.

Next to perform were The Zac Brown Band who also won the Best New Artist Award over peers from other genres. It was such a great moment for the band especially since their win was announced by country singers Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert who were both heavyweights in the industry. In their performance, a mix of country, blues, rock and even reggae, the band announced their surprise guest, and out came Russell in front of the piano singing "Dixie Lullaby", a collaboration he did with the band. The band also performed parts of their hit songs "America The Beautiful" and ended with "Chicken Fried."

Underwood later took to the stage as part of the ensemble of singers who joined the 3D tribute to Michael Jackson. Another highlight of the awards show was when Sugarland's Nettles came out on stage to do a duet with Jon Bon Jovi with the song "Who Says You Can't Go Home." Of course, the night would not have been complete if America's reigning country sweetheart did not perform her latest country love songs. Swift also took to the stage and did her songs "Today Was A Fairytale," "You Belong With Me," and was later joined by Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks for a duet of the band's "Rhiannon." Although Swift's off-key singing was widely panned by critics the next day, her haul of four Grammy awards (Album Of The Year, Best Female Country Vocal Performance, Best Country Song, and Best Country Album) still validated this young country singer's undeniable talent and panache.

Apart from the performers, other country singers also graced the event. Underwood and country great Randy Travis' duet of Travis' hit song "I Told You So" won an award as the Best Country Collaboration with Vocals. In addition, bluegrass veteran Alison Krauss also made history by winning her 27th Grammy for her participation in the album "Yo Yo Ma & Friends: Songs of Joy & Peace."

All in all, Nashville's legends, superstars, and upcoming talents did the music community proud proving that country music is a genre to reckon with in next year's Grammy Awards.

The Art of Patrick Walsh is the amazing art project

Patrick Walsh - BIOGRAPHY

Although Patrick Walsh uses a camera to his work of art, which is not considered as a photographer, and the piece is, "Photography". However, Walsh could not approach his work as a painter, and painted with the camera. The camera is the brush and the photos are the key to his Photomosaics: a large-scale meditation on people, places and things that he, with the Chamber of filter, then play. TheThe final results - flattened images that show us what is perceived in our peripheral vision - they were much deeper and wider than the sum of its original parts.

Walsh, who study advertising and graphic design at Parsons School of Design in her hometown, New York, and as a hobby, he painted his first work not more than thirty years, when monitoring for a film. He found a place that can not be included in an image. Therefore, shotmost, with a camera and Kodak instant assemblies images. The result fascinates him, and Walsh was soon aware can make excursions in the desert in the south-west Pacific and the wind on the themes of his art.

Each time the pieces together countless photos Walsh, who shot to create a single image that tells a new story. His subjects are as varied as Dennis Conner in front of his sailboat, a baseball stadium empty, the desert or a rain green differentForest. And while the end result spontaneously in May, the process is nothing, "says Walsh. Each site is carefully examined, reprint, and work is very well led by Walsh, to increase the opening to collect the images.

This commission led to another, the Baltimore Orioles. The results of 7Feet long Photomosaic of the new Camden Yards at the reception was Ball Club for the All Star Game Highlights. Both works are under private clubs.

Once shot, shapes Walsh, who has experience with the records. "I created a composition with more pictures and even in these recordings, there is a good for himself. I put in the mix. 3 ways of seeing the stars of Hollywood

The word "Hollywood has in mind that the houses cost seven figures, many movie stars and a place where you never really see you next time.

But of course we can never guarantee that takes place in a big movie star, no matter how apparently May. There are other ways to see if the stars, and can as much fun as a quick glance at the real thing.

Tip: Visit the wax museum in Hollywood, for example. This celebration will be on the guarantees of Hollywood BoulevardMen can use some of the most important movie stars of recent years and even rubbing. If you ever wondered if they were bigger than Angelina Jolie, or see what Elvis Presley did not really look like up close, this is the place to find answers.

It's open for four decades, and is always very popular with visitors. You can pay tribute to Michael Jackson, and here you can hit with your favoriteCelebrity.

The second way of looking at the stars, a visit to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Not seen, as in this case, of course, but you can see their footprints, if you go to the cinema Grauman's Chinese Theater.

It is the theater on Hollywood Boulevard, and offers a fascinating look back decades many of the most famous names in Hollywood. Guys like modern film is Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger have their hands in concrete, butThere are many other names, too. Find classic names such as Joan Crawford and Judy Garland, his footsteps in the years 1920 and 1930, respectively, on the left.

When you see the homes of stars and discover their potential, we would like to raise them, you must book a place on a road from their home in Hollywood. Be sure to choose a good circuit with a good reputation, however, because some are good as others. And know that even if perhaps the chance to see a movie star, theYou can easily find places of interest, rather than the stars themselves.

One objective bonus last year, in addition to these three is the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. This can go to a strange place, but people like Douglas Fairbanks Jr., who appears with the wind, "said the director Victor Fleming and Mel Blanc Gone are buried here along with many others.

While in Hollywood, you can relax in a hotel in Hollywood. It may not be ableallow the millions of dollars from the pulp of superstars, but still able to relax comfortably at night in the same city.

Dr. Seuss Quotes

Dr. Seuss Quotes: Scan through the Pages of the Books
You may hear them on TV or from friends, or you may read them in print, but the real Dr. Seuss quotes can be obtained straight from the main source: from the books published by the author.

Over the course of his professional career, Theodor Seuss Geisel, a world-renowned cartoonist and writer, had launched countless children's books, with a lot of spunk and great stories to tell. They are also excellent sources of Dr. Seuss quotes.

The Books of Dr. Seuss
1. And to Think that I Saw It on Mulberry Street. Some of the famous quotes found here are actually spoken by the main character named Marco. He was an inquisitive young boy who loved to pay attention to his surroundings, particularly the people who lived and passed by the Mulberry Street. The Dr. Seuss quotes, moreover, are addressed to his dad, to whom he wished to tell the story.

2. The Cat in the Hat. The Cat in the Hat is one of the most popular fiction books created by Dr. Seuss. Some of the Dr. Seuss quotes related to this would also come from the movie adaptations. The first one, which was published in 1957, would also be the beginning of other 5 follow-up books of the similar story line. The Dr. Seuss quotes here are normally spoken by the two young kids and, most of all, the cat, who planned to plan chaos into the household. The famous quotes are witty, treacherous in meaning, but totally entertaining.

3. The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins. This book was launched before the end of the 1930s. Unlike other Dr. Seuss quotes, which were part of rhymed verses, the famous quotes here were actually from prose. The main characters in the story were King Derwin and Bartholomew. Moreover, since the setting of the story was in feudal era, you can find some old English Dr. Seuss quotes.

4. Green Eggs and Ham. There are definitely enumerable Dr. Seuss quotes in this book. After all, everything-from the story down to the setting-were told in spoken dialogues. Furthermore, to make sure that the book will also be appreciated by children, Seuss added some graphics or images.

5. Horton Hears a Who. This is a classic fiction from Seuss and was later adapted into a movie. The Dr. Seuss quotes are spoken by the protagonist Horton, an elephant who was responsible for the safety and protection of Whoville. It's a small community that lived on a speck of a dust.

Indeed, classics can give you excellent and worth-remembering adages, such as Dr. Seuss quotes. If you don't know where to look for these books, you can definitely shop in your book shops. A lot of them are absolutely selling them knowing how popular they are after all these years.

You can also download the books from the Internet in the form of PDFs. You can later save them in your laptop, desktop PCs, or even in your PDAs; so you can comfortably access these Dr. Seuss quotes even when you're on the road.

Girls and Their Dogs - A Children's Book Pick From the Writing for Children Center

Wow! This is the ultimate book for any young girl who loves dogs. In fact, if this book had been around when I was about 8 or 10 years old, I would probably have slept with it under my pillow. At that time, dogs were the most important creatures in my world - as they are today to many young girls the world over.

Girls will love the stories about real dogs (and the girls who own them) that are just part of the great dog-related information in this jazzy new book from American Girl and Pleasant Company Publications. The book also includes links to online resources about dogs and special programs that involve dogs.

And girls will really have fun trying some of the recipes to create yummy treats for both dogs and their owners. They can whip up a batch of "Woof Woof Waffles" for their favorite dog - OR - try some "Puppycakes" (cupcakes decorated to look like dogs - you have to see these darling creations to truly appreciate the concept of puppycakes) for themselves and their "human" friends.

The book includes suggested names for pooches, doggie trading cards and mini-posters, and even tips for doodling a dog - creating cute pen-and-pencil pooches. A dog dictionary lets dog owners know just what their dog is trying to say when he yelps, barks, whines, or squeals. And dogs will appreciate their owners reading the section called "12 Ways to Love Dogs," then following up with what they've learned.

Colorful photographs and other illustrations help make this book simply irresistible to dog-loving girls everywhere.

The old cigar box (poem in prose)

An old cigar box, I bought it for over thirty years, the next day, saying: "1900" in large black letters cut (and its dark and gloomy forest, with a blue band that was once the old man now lost his grain), and it seems that everything old, and for some reason, they treat me like gold, as I always looked older and older. It also has glass in it, and the decor very chic on the banks up and down and around and down, and some oldwhich reads: "Mr. Kratchvill 's, La Crosse, Wisconsin" on the back Law 45, a joint here and there I found a city in Minnesota, in an antique shop, and I keep my old photos on this, I wish you could speak, perhaps for the death and the many faces he has seen, and many owners , now forgotten, is a thing of the past.

One hundred nine years this year, old old wooden cigar box, this does not mean that walking, but only if the cure is not it? Buried in a little 'lowFrom antiques and inertia? Used once a cigar, and then was its silence. We speed up these words in the morning thinking about sleep, sleepless night that the rate of creep, I see you, you, as long as the sun and is happy in her smile, in my presence lethal chamber, I will be forgotten over time aimed at short.
